Legion, VA teaming up for memorial benefits Facebook chat

E-mail Print PDF

On April 18, The American Legion and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will team up for a Facebook chat on VA’s new pre-need burial eligibility determination program. This important change to VA memorial benefits allows veterans and family members to find out in advance if they are eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery.

Participating in the Facebook chat is easy. Visit The American Legion National Headquarters Facebook page on April 18. The discussion will begin at 3 p.m. ET in the comment section of the post announcing the Facebook chat. During the chat, VA and The American Legion will post answers to 10 of the most frequently asked questions and will respond to questions submitted as comments.

This event is part of the #ExploreVA From Service to Success online event series highlighting how veterans and their families are using VA benefits. VA benefits help veterans earn degrees, start careers, buy homes, stay healthy and more. For more information and to receive email reminders about upcoming events, visit

A veteran’s family must request a United States flag.

A flag is provided at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran. Generally, the flag is given to the next of kin. Only one flag may be provided per veteran. Upon the request of the family, an “Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes” (VA Form 21-2008) must be submitted along with a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers. Flags may be obtained from VA regional offices and most U.S. Post Offices.
