Volunteer for community outreach project in Minneapolis

The American Legion will once again conduct a community outreach project during the 100th National Convention in Minneapolis. Legion Family members are encouraged to volunteer.

The American Legion and Rebuild Together-Twin Cities will be working at the East 7th Neighborhood Garden at Cambric Senior Apartments in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday, Aug. 24, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The garden allows residents to grow their own food and flowers, be outside and socialize with their neighbors. Volunteers are needed to help build raised garden beds, a storage shed and a compost bin.

For those interested in volunteering, please email American Legion Membership Marketing Coordinator Michele Steinmetz at msteinmetz@legion.org by Aug. 3. Buses will provide transportation to and from the Cambric Senior Apartments. Location of pickup has yet to be decided.

A veteran’s family must request a United States flag.

A flag is provided at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran. Generally, the flag is given to the next of kin. Only one flag may be provided per veteran. Upon the request of the family, an “Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes” (VA Form 21-2008) must be submitted along with a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers. Flags may be obtained from VA regional offices and most U.S. Post Offices.
