Veteran business owners and entrepreneurs are invited to attend a free workshop and seminar focused on federal and state contracting opportunities for veteran businesses in New York City on May 13 at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

The event, which runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m., will focus on taking advantage of New York's Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Act, recently signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The establishes a goal that 6 percent of all New York State contracts be awarded to service-disabled veteran-owned businesses. The topic of federal contracting for veteran business owners will also be addressed.

Several entities will host the event, including the City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Vets GSA and Drexel Hamilton. Legion Business Task Force member Scott Davidson is also an event organizer.

Local resources for veteran business owners will also be available before and after the event. And numerous government officials and representatives from veterans service organizations - including The American Legion - will be on hand to answer questions and provide insights into issues that affect veteran businesses.

A veteran’s family must request a United States flag.

A flag is provided at no cost to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a deceased veteran. Generally, the flag is given to the next of kin. Only one flag may be provided per veteran. Upon the request of the family, an “Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes” (VA Form 21-2008) must be submitted along with a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers. Flags may be obtained from VA regional offices and most U.S. Post Offices.
